Enclomiphene is a prescription oral medication that can help some men with low testosterone make more of their own. At NovaGenix, Dr. Timothy W. Mackey reviews your symptoms, history and lab work before deciding whether enclomiphene is appropriate. Enclomiphene is not FDA-approved as a standalone drug for treating male hypogonadism in the United States.
Enclomiphene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) and the trans-isomer of clomiphene citrate. By blocking estrogen feedback at the hypothalamus and pituitary, it can increase LH and FSH, which signal the testes to produce testosterone and support sperm production. Testosterone replacement therapy works differently: it supplies testosterone directly and usually suppresses LH, FSH and sperm production. Compare the two in Enclomiphene vs. TRT.
Dr. Mackey may consider enclomiphene when a man has:
It is often discussed when preserving fertility matters. It is less likely to help when the testes themselves can't respond, and it is not appropriate for everyone. Depending on the patient, Dr. Mackey may prescribe enclomiphene on its own, alongside TRT, or when a man is coming off TRT. Because testosterone therapy suppresses the same signals enclomiphene stimulates, adding enclomiphene to TRT should not be assumed to preserve fertility. Read Enclomiphene for Men on TRT.
Enclomiphene therapy at NovaGenix is $99 per month. Your dose and protocol are set by Dr. Mackey, and costs are reviewed with you by Dr. Mackey and Andy, our clinic manager, before you begin treatment. The male hormone panel is $125 and is billed separately, or recent labs from your own physician can be used. NovaGenix is a direct self-pay practice and does not bill health insurance. NovaGenix will work with a patient to create a superbill if requested.
In clinical trials of men with secondary hypogonadism, enclomiphene raised testosterone while sperm concentrations were maintained. Testosterone gel, by comparison, reduced them. That does not guarantee fertility. Men actively trying to conceive should be evaluated with semen analysis, reproductive history and hormone testing. See TRT and fertility and hCG therapy.
SERM therapy can cause side effects and is medically monitored. Reported concerns with clomiphene-class medications include headache, mood changes, visual symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms and changes in estradiol or other lab values. Long-term safety data for enclomiphene are more limited than for established testosterone therapies. Report visual changes, severe headache, chest pain, shortness of breath or significant mood changes promptly. NovaGenix and Dr. Mackey are not mental health providers. If mood symptoms are part of what you're experiencing, Dr. Mackey may work with your primary care physician or mental health provider.
Enclomiphene is a prescription drug, not a dietary supplement. Avoid online sellers that don't require a valid prescription or can't be verified as licensed pharmacies. Products from unknown sources may be counterfeit, contaminated or mislabeled. A compounded preparation is not FDA-approved, which is why your prescriber should explain the product, its sourcing and how you'll be monitored.
